Upper division workshop courses are offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in poetry, nonfiction, and fiction. You can't write a book without getting feedback, because you're too close to the work. Student writers not only have access to these provocative and rigorous courses, but they also can partake in the larger offerings of Columbia's thriving School of the Arts : the readings, lectures, performances, and plays that bring together the world's most gifted artists and writers, who come to Columbia to test their vision and explore the enormous power of literary art. Students can select courses in order to fulfill the following major requirements. Carson McCullers worked odd jobs in the city to pay for her Columbia writing courses. For this reason, the Creative Writing Department offers two types of courses. The festival is situated within the larger Evanston Literary Festival, which hosts a number of literary events throughout the city.
Students in the creative writing seminars read a book each week and engage in round-table discussions about the artistic attributes of the texts, in order to better understand how literature might be made.
Admission to the Program Admission to the next stage of the Creative Writing Major or the Sequence-based Minor in Creative Writing, the year-long level advanced course sequences, is competitive.

Out of the applicants each year, the entering class includes only six playwrights, 12 poets and fewer than 12 fiction writers. Students may not apply to the creative writing program in their first year.

ENG ,2 - English Literary Traditions or ENG ,2 - American Literary Traditions While not required for creative writing, these are excellent background courses for writing students, and also serve as prerequisites for the English literature major.
